Create Family Fun By Joining Kids Cooking
One of the scariest thoughts a parent can have if thought of their kids cooking in the kitchen, playing around with the hot stove or oven, possibly using an electric mixer or food chopper and considering the potential for mess while measuring ingredients. However, not all families are afraid of their kids cooking since they are working with them to help learn the joys of homemade made meals and desserts.
Yes, they are probably going to make a mess the first few times they help in the kitchen, but after a few times of spilling the flour or milk on the counter and floor, they will get the hang of measuring out ingredients into the measuring cups and not on the floor. When teaching the kids cooking, measuring is probably the first thing they should be taught, as their measuring can be checked before it is added to the mixing bowl.
When mom or dad make the initial to teach the kids cooking, it may be easier to start with a boxed item, such as a cake or brownies, where few ingredients have to be mixed. There is less chance for a mess and it does not take very long for them to see the finished product.
Teach Kitchen Safety While Learning To Cook
A few trial runs of teaching kids cooking techniques, they will probably be ready to move on to more complicated items made from scratch. However, they need to know the importance of safety when working in the kitchen as well. Think back to the initial reservations about how they could get hurt to get an idea of what they need to learn. Things like not licking the beaters while they are still in the mixer and always wear oven mitts when taking pans out of the oven are not going to be natural for the first few episodes of kids cooking.
Handling knives or choppers should be left out of the role of kids cooking until they have demonstrated responsibility of other kitchen utensils and appliances. As they show responsibility in the tasks assigned, additional jobs can be added to the kids cooking job.
Whatever approach that is taken to teach kids cooking, the two main ingredients they should understand is safety and sanitation. With that knowledge they will be able to help out in the kitchen without fear of them getting hurt or serving food that could cause others to become ill.
