The New Jewish Table: Modern Seasonal Recipes for Traditional Dishes
Review: The New Jewish Table: Modern Seasonal Recipes for Traditional Dishes
Book Description
- The New Jewish Table explores the melding of two different cooking cultures, seasonal American and Eastern-European Jewish, sharing the mouth-watering recipes that result from this flavorful union from authors, chef Todd Gray and his wife Ellen Kassoff Gray. More than a love story about what one can do with fresh ingredients, Todd and Ellen talk about the food they grew up with, their life together, and how rewarding the sharing of two people’s traditions—and meals—can be. When Chef Todd married his wife, Ellen, who is Jewish, their union brought about his initiation into the world of Jewish cooking. In 1999, Todd combined his love for farm-to-table ingredients with his passion for Jewish cuisine, opening the acclaimed Equinox Restaurant in Washington, D.C.
- With more than 125 recipes including reinterpretations of traditional Jewish favorites made with fresh, seasonal ingredients, from Yukon Gold and Sweet Potato Latkes, Ellen's Falafel with Pickled Vegetables and Minted Lemon Yogurt, and Roasted Heirloom Beets with Capers and Pistachios, to Matzo-Stuffed Cornish Game Hens, Fig and Port Wine Blintzes, and Chocolate Hazelnut Rugelach, there are recipes for every occasion that the entire family will enjoy.

Many people want to learn techniques and ways to cook. Baking is sort of a precise art while cooking meals are usually dependent on the cooks preference. Cooking recipes for cakes and other pastries usually have terms that need to be understood and followed to make a successful cake. Cooking recipes for meals usually have simpler terms and it is usually the ingredients that may need defining.

Learning to read and cook a recipe is a great way to process how to blend the different flavors found in food. While it may seem obvious, learning to read a recipe is a very beneficial household skill that many people take for granted. The most important thing to remember when cooking a new recipe is to read the recipe entirely, all the way through, from beginning to end. Many people do not perform this initial step and often have a frustrating time in the kitchen because of this oversight.

Review: The Pleasures of Cooking for One
Cooking for one can be a very fun way to cook. As someone that eats differently than my family, I am often cooking a special meal for myself that does not include same items that they are eating. Since this is a habit that I have been involved in for quite some time, I have many recipes and ideas that are focused on creating only one serving. If you are new to the idea of cooking for one, dont despair it is much easier than you might think.
Pre-Planning And A Well Stocked Pantry Make Cooking For One An Easy Task
A well-stocked pantry provides a solid foundation in which to create delicious dinners for one person. Whole-wheat four cheese ravioli can be bought in a large container and frozen in individual servings. On a night when dinner is in a rush, take out a serving for one size dinner portion, cooking it according to the package directions and then covering with a favorite canned spaghetti sauce makes a quick meal in only minutes. Serve it with a salad on the side and dinner is done.
New Packaging Seems To Be Done With Cooking For One In Mind
In recent years, companies are becoming more aware of families buying frozen items in bulk and using them as needed. This is especially true with fish and chicken companies. It is not uncommon today to purchase a quantity size bag of frozen fish fillets or boneless chicken breasts that are individually frozen and packaged within the larger bag. This is a great benefit to the single person who is often cooking for one. Buying individually frozen meats, bulk packaged, allows for someone who is cooking for one to still enjoy the reduced cost of buying foods in bulk that stay fresher longer.
Specialty Kitchen Gadgets And Cookware Focus On Cooking For One Concepts
As a person that cooks for only one meal at a time, I find that I need items that are designed for smaller portions. On a recent shopping adventure, I found the perfect single size stoneware baking pan that holds the exact amount of vegetables for roasting, a fish fillet or beef steak or a baking potato. This piece of stoneware has become invaluable to me. It is the perfect size for cooking one serving and still fits in the oven with the traditional size cookware that I use for my family, so I can cook both sets of meals at the same time.

As a mother of four, including two teenage boys, cooking for a crowd is something I do nightly. In order to feed my family of six, I have to prepare enough food for a group of ten. Now, it isnt always easy to come up with creative culinary delights from a mental cookbook for a crowd this size every day of the week.
After working eight hours, it wasnt always easy to immediately come up with a tasty meal idea my family would enjoy. A few years ago I found a way to ease the burden of the whats for dinner, Mom blues. I purchased a 5 X 8 cookbook that fits inside my purse or monthly planner, it specialized in meals that can be prepared in under twenty minutes and it made such an improvement in my daily life.

My former neighbor, Mary Young, a relatively new empty nester, remarked on how free she feels with her nine kids out of the house. This feeling is common. Joy Smith, author of “The Empty Nest Cookbook,” encourages people to take advantage of it: “For the first time in years you can cook because you want to, not because you must. You have fewer people and palates to please, so cook in ways you’ve never dared.”

Product Review: Chinese Cook Books: An Overview
Originally pought to America by Chinese immigrants lured to the Pacific coast by the gold rush of 1849, Chinese food is now one of the nation's most popular cuisines. This is reflected by the hundreds of Chinese cook books on the market. This article will look at some of the best selling Chinese cook books.
The Wisdom of the Chinese Kitchen
The Wisdom of the Chinese Kitchen: Classic Family Recipes for Celepation and Healing by Grace Young is not your typical Chinese cook book. Rather than just give the usual list of recipes, Young uses anecdotes and tales of her family experiences as a third generation Chinese immigrant living in San Francisco to illustrate the basic principles of Chinese cookery. For example, she devotes a chapter to cutting techniques and another to the art of steaming, outlining the similarities and differences between the steaming utensils found in a Chinese kitchen and the bain marie used in French cooking. Amazon compares Young to acclaimed Chinese novelist Amy Tan, not to other cookery writers, and recommends the book to those seeking to immerse themselves in Chinese culture, rather than simply preparing a meal.
Chinese Regional Cook Books by Fuchsia Dunlop
With China being such a huge country, it is no surprise that there is considerable regional variation in Chinese cooking. Fuchsia Dunlop, cooking consultant for London's fashionable Bar Shu Sichuan restaurant and the first foreign student ever enrolled in the Sichuan Institute of Higher Cuisine, has written two books that highlight these differences, as well as a memoir, which falls outside the scope of this article. Land of Plenty is a guide to Sichuan cookery, with its 23 flavors and 56 cooking methods, all of which are listed at the back of the book.
Its companion volume, the Revolutionary Chinese Cookbook, details the cuisine of the neighboring Hunan province (birthplace of Chairman Mao, hence the book's title), which is noted for its hearty, spicy peasant food. The book includes Mao's favorite dish, red-paised pork, and contains 65 color illustrations.
The Healing Cuisine of China
The Healing Cuisine of China: 300 Recipes for Vipant Health and Longevity by Zhuo Zhao and George Ellis differs from other Chinese cook books in that its recipes are not just healthy and delicious, but viewed within the context of traditional Chinese medicine. The book outlines Chinese theories of yin and yang, the five elements and the causes of illness. According to the book's back cover, no clear distinction exists in China between food and medicine, so this book is ideal for those who take a similar holistic approach to life.

This has been one of the most fun recipe books I have used. The Author, Ron Douglas, gives very detailed information on how to cook the recipes that are in his book. These recipes are from some of the most popular restaurants in America. You can click the link at the top of my blog to see a list of the restaurants.
I have tried many of the recipes and my family is asking me to make more of them as they choose from their favorite choices. Using this book has saved me time and money from taking my family out to eat and gives you more variety to offer them at home.
