There was a time when being diabetic meant a life of eating nasty sugar free foods that you bought at the drugstore rather than the supermarket. Fortunately, there are now many diabetic cook books on the market that allow people with diabetes to experience delicious healthy foods. This article will look at some of them.



Betty Crocker's Diabetes Cookbook

Those who associate the (fictitious) Betty Crocker name with sinfully sugar laden desserts may be surprised to find it on a best selling diabetic cook book.. But the people at General Mills, owners of the Betty Crocker trademark, have teamed up with the International Diabetes Center to create this 256 page book filled with recipes to help diabetics eat a healthy balanced diet without sending your blood sugar skyrocketing.

The recipes contain all food groups, including sugar. This has caused some controversy among those who believe that people with diabetes shouldn't eat any sugar at all, but the endocrinologists who supervised the book's production say that some sugar is acceptable provided you follow the nutrition guidelines contained in the book. However, if you don't wish to spend a lot of time planning your meals in advance in order to ensure that you get the right proportion of each food group, this might not be the book for you.

Diabetic Cooking with International Flair

Diabetic Cooking with International Flair by Sue Lousley and Ann Watson is a diabetic cook book featuring Chinese, Japanese, Indonesian, Indian, Mexican and Middle Eastern recipes for people with diabetes. There are 150 recipes in all, from a wide variety of cuisines. Best of all, used copies are available for as little as a penny (plus shipping and handling).

The featured cuisines are from cultures where diabetes is relatively rare, due to diets that are low in fat and refined sugar and high in fiber. Many of the recipes will be familiar to those who already eat these cuisines, and there is a section listing "food exchanges" to help users of the book to balance their diets.

The 4-Ingredient Diabetic Cookbook

The 4-Ingredient Diabetic Cookbook by Nancy Hughes contains easy to prepare recipes for people with diabetes that use four ingredients or less. Some purists regard Hughes' use of pre-prepared products such as onion soup mix among the ingredients as cheating, while others believe that it doesn't matter. Obviously, this is a matter of personal choice, but if you want recipes for diabetes that are simple and quick, this book may be a good choice.
